Red Scorpions Chaplain

It is time to post something again, and what better opportunity to do so than when providing my assault squad with some proper spiritual guidance?

Enter the Chaplain!
This model features a few conversions:

  • Deathwatch Chaplain was used as the base model;
  • Bolt Pistol was replaced by a Plasma Pistol from a Space Marine sprue;
  • Jump Pack was picked up from the bits bin at my local store (presumably it was a Dark Angels or Blood Angels jump pack).

The Deathwatch Chaplain blister also had one of the new 32mm bases, in addition to the normal scenic base included with the sprues, and in order to have the fitting terrain effect I had to grind down some of the scenic base with a Dremel.
Needless to say, my workspace smelled of molten plastic for a while 😖

I already played him in a few games and his support in the Fight Phase is truly invaluable, so he will continue to play an important role in the upcoming game of my local store's WH40k campaign.

Do enjoy 😄

Red Scorpions Primaris Apothecary

Yet another addition to my growing Red Scorpions army.
The Chapter needs Apothecaries to stay true to their motto, strength in purity.
So I thought I'd give the new Primaris Apothecary a chance to join the ranks.

Really didn't like doing all the white parts, was a real pain to keep clean and tidy, but in the end I'm satisfied with the overall result.
That armor will definitely stand out on the tabletop. Hopefully not too much... 😌

Also available in my DeviantArt gallery.

Dragonslayer Ornstein & Executioner Smough

Back when the Kickstarter of the Dark Souls boardgame was announced, one of my friends decided to participate and back the hell out of it. I am afraid to actually ask how high his pledge was, and how many backer rewards came with it...

I promised him that I would paint one of the bosses out of all the miniatures, and left him the choice of which one. The decision fell onto the Dancer initially, but Steamforge Games changed the pose of the model later during development, so the miniature ended up looking so weird, the cool factor dropped by like 400%. We had to come up with a different choice of bosses, and the only other boss in the box is the iconic duo of the Dark Souls franchise: Ornstein and Smough.

Mostly a speed paint job using airbrush and a heavy amount of wash mix, I nonetheless believe they will make a memorable appearance each time they will appear on the board.

Magister Sevrin Loth

Meet the Chief Librarian of the Red Scorpions 😃

Ever since Forge World published the Badab War books during the 4th edition of WH40k, which also contained the Siege Vanguard army list, this model has been gathering dust in one of the "to do" boxes in my man-cave. I just never found the motivation to build and paint him, because I had completely lost interest in the WH40k game as a whole (some of the rules and policies GW pushed during 5th and 6th edition were questionable).

That is, until the release of the 8th edition last year, and the Primaris Marines which I fell in love with. Recently my local game store decided to run their own WH40k campaign, and I decided to pick him as my Warlord just so I could give the Librarians some love.
They don't seem to get much, it at all, and I don't see Space Marine Librarians that often.

The Whithershadow Combine

Every now and then I just have to find a slot to fit in some Warmachine models for my Cryx army.
The Combine is a group of Iron Liches who work as attachment and support for the Warcasters.

Admonia, the one on the left can upkeep a spell for free while in the Warcaster's control range while Tremulus, the guy on the right can force a friendly or enemy unit to re-roll dice once. The one in the middle is called Maelovus and is the unit leader; he used to have an ability called Dark Industry, which allowed the Coven to rebuild a Warjack by standing next to, and consuming, a wreck marker, but in his current iterarion he has the Spell Slave ability, so he can cast a spell from the Warcaster's spell list.

So far I haven't had a chance to field them in Mk.III but I'm sure I can put them to good use eventually.

Red Scorpions Primaris Chaplain

Meet Brother Davkas, newest addition to my Red Scorpions.

Painting the bone parts took a disproportionate amount of time, literal days entirely spent on skulls etc. I love the model though.

Christmas incoming!

So my Forge World order for the Red Scorpions new releases has arrived the other day, and my girlfriend brought me an Imperial Knight as a gift for our first anniversary.
If that ain't someone special, I don't know what is 😍

Are you looking forward to anything special under the tree this year?

Dienstag, 5. Dezember 2017

Mistakes were made...

Indeed, I just couldn't resist... 😅
I was following Forge World's news feed, eagerly awaiting anything that would announce the opening of the pre-orders for the new Red Scorpions characters, in the form of an Ancient (Sirae Karagon) and chapter master Casan Sabius, and the former Carab Culln risen as a Leviathan Dreadnought.

I ordered them today 😅
The rules for the characters are available as downloadable PDFs from the Forge World website directly, and I was a bit disappointed to find out that Karagon is nothing special, but instead just a stand-in for an ordinary Ancient, but Sabius and Culln more than make up for it.
Of course, Forge World was smart enough to include the restriction on Culln, so you can't field him in his Dreadnought form together with either of the other two "ordinary" forms 😏

Looking forward to building and painting these!

Witch Coven of Garlghast & Egregore

Another Warcaster added to my growing Cryx army. I don't get to play Warmachine as often as I would like to, but I enjoy those games so much more for it.

I wanted to capture the "nightly" vibe they have, both in their design and their background story, and i also wanted to give the Egregore the floating effect from the artwork, but I forgot to mask the flying stand before priming the miniatures in black, so it's not transparent anymore.

All painted in nightly blue colors and black shadow, in stark contrast with their pale skin, with the Egregore painted in metal and glowing green, the three sisters are ready to have darkness fall upon their foes. Can't wait to field them on the table!

Warhammer 40'000 - Red Scorpions Vs. Black Templars

It's time for me to make an attempt at writing a battle report. Keeping track of what happens in a battle is not always an easy thing to do, because it takes away from the immersion and forces you to spend energy and focus into taking notes and pictures, so I don't do it often and only if my opponent is willing to go along with it.

Mission and Setup
My opponent and I have decided to play a small Eternal War game of about 1160 points, and rolled on the tables to determine the type of mission and deployment we would get.
Mission: Secure and Control
Deployment: Frontline Assault
I won the roll-off so I chose on which side of the table to deploy and set up the first objective marker, then we moved on to deploying our armies after my opponent had set up his marker.

Army Lists
Black Templars
Captain in Gravis Armor
Lieutenant with bolt pistol and power sword
Lieutenant with bolt pistol and auto bolt rifle
Primaris Ancient
Intercessor Squad (5) with bolt pistol and bolt rifle
Intercessor Squad (5) with bolt pistol and bolt rifle
Inceptor Squad (3) with assault bolters
Hellblaster Squad (5) with plasma incinerators
Repulsor with heavy onlsaught gatling, onslaught gatling, icarus stubber, ironhail stubber options

Red Scorpions
Captain with boltgun, relic blade and plasma pistol
Dreadnought with twin lascannon option
Terminator Squad (5) with assault cannon
Tactical Squad (10) with missile launcher, plasma gun, sgt w/ combi plasma
Tactical Squad (5) with plasma gun, sgt w/ plasma pistol/chainsword
Intercessor Squad (5) with bolt rifles
Intercessor Squad (5) with bolt rifles
Vindicator with storm bolter and hunter-killer missile
Rhino with hunter-killer missile

Deployment
My opponent begins setting up far back along the long edge of his deployment zone, placing a squad of Hellblasters on top of a ruin, backed by a Primaris Lieutenant. He then embarks a squad of Intercessors into his Repulsor, and spearheads with a castle composed of his Captain in Gravis Armour, his second Lieutenant, a second squad of Intercessors and a Primaris Ancient. His squad of Inceptors is kept in Reserve.

I want a more aggressive approach and deploy my army closer to the front edge of the deployment zone, splitting my 10-man tactical squad into two combat squads, with the long range missile launcher staying in the back while the rest stays near my objective to prevent a potential turn 1 incursion by the enemy's Inceptors. My Terminators are kept in reserve, and my Captain and the 5-man Tactical Squad geared towards close combat are embarked in the Rhino.

Black Templars finish their deployment first and have first turn.
Red Scorpions attempt to seize the initiative but fail.

Turn 1
Black Templars
Skip their movement phase entirely, nothing budges.
Hellblasters attempt to fire at the Tactical squad defending my objective, the only target in sight and range, but cause no harm. Inceptors stay in Reserve.
Red Scorpions
Everything advances. Leftmost intercessor squad climbs the hill, the Tactical squad in the center abandons the objective, which is taken by the Intercessors, and move towards the tower at the center of the map. Vindicator, Dreadnought and Rhino push forward, Tactical squad on the right side climbs the ruin to get into firing position. Terminators stay in Reserve.
Most of the arm takes shots at targets they can see and are in range, but fail to cause any damage. Only exception is the Vindicator, which fires into the Hellblasters and causes enough damage to kill 2 and leave one wounded.

Turn 2
Black Templars
This time the Templars take the Badab War veterans more seriously, and advance to meet the enemy. Primaris Ancient walks all the way to the base of the tower to provide bonus, one Lieutenant follows close behind the Hellblasters, the other next to the Intercessors near the tower. Inceptors stay in Reserve.
The Repulsor fires everything into the Red Scorpions Intercessors on the hill, but causes enough damage to only kill one of them. The Intercessors squad near the tower and the Hellblasters fire everything into the Vindicator, but the shots bounce off the dozer blade.

Red Scorpions
Captain and his Tactical disembark from the Rhino, which rumbles into position in front of the Repulsor, ready for a charge. Dreadnought follows close by. Vindicator rolls forward to cover both the infantry and the Repulsor in his arc of fire, and be in range for a charge. Tactical squad follows suit. Intercessors on the left advance towards the edge of the hill, the other squad keeps my objective secure from Inceptor incursion.
Storm Bolters from Dreadnought, Rhino and the Bolt Rifle fire from the Intercessors on the hill go into the Ancient, but only cause 1 wound. Dreadnought's twin lascannons and hunter-killer missiles from Rhino and Vindicator fly into the Repulsor, knocking 10 hull points off the hovertank. Tactical squad by the tower fires into the Intercessor squad, causing enough damage to kill one and wound another. Charge time!
Rhino charges into the Repulsor, absorbing all the overwatch fire and taking only 1 damage. Dreadnought seemed too far away to be able to make the charge distance, but I roll boxcars and he just flies in. Vindicator charges into the Intercessors, absorbing all the overwatch fire and taking no damage, followed by the Tactical squad.

In the melee that ensues, the Dreadnought destroys the Repulsor and earns First Blood for the Red Scorpions. No casualties or wounds are inflicted in the second combat.

Turn 3
Black Templars
Having lost a significant portion of their army, Templars are now facing an uphill battle with little to no anti-tank weaponry. Ancient and Lieutenants head towards the melee with the Vindicator, while the Captain stays near the Hellblasters to provide moral support. Finally, Inceptors are called down but are placed close to the Templar deployment zone.

Little happens in terms of shooting, the weak firepower against the few available targets causes no damage. Inceptors forget to fire at all. Charge time!
In the ensuing melee, Templars cause some damage to the Vindicator. The Scorpions' Tactical squad kills the already wounded Templar Intercessor.

Red Scorpions
With the threat of an Inceptor incursion now gone, there is no reason for me to keep the objective until later in the game, so my infantry moves forward. Rhino and Dreadnought bring themselves closer to the infantry around the enemy Captain, while the leftmost Intercessor squad finally climbs down the hill and begins crossing open field. My Terminators come in from reserves teleport down near the Hellblasters.

In the shooting phase, Terminators manage to kill the wounded Hellblaster, while the Intercessors on the field and the Tactical squad accompanying their Captain manage to kill one of the Inceptors. Rhino and Dreadnought then charge into the Intercessor squad near the enemy Captain, killing 3 of them but they manage to inflict 1 damage to the Dreadnought in return. In the other melee, the Vindicator and Tactical squad kill one more Intercessor, but lose 2 Tactical marines in the process.

Turn 4
Black Templars
Movement phase brings the Templar Captain closer to the Dreadnought while keeping the melee around the Vindicator in range of his aura bonus, Hellblasters climb back up to the top of the ruin, the rest pile in.
Hellblaters exact their revenge upon the Terminators in the shooting phase and manage to kill one, while the Inceptors kill one of the Intercessors in the open.
Captain then charges into the Dreadnought and inflicts 2 points of damage, but takes a slap in return for the Dreadnought for 3 damage. In the melee around the Vindicator, 2 wounds are inflicted against the Ancient.

At this point the Black Templars see their uphill battle as hopeless and decide to concede the game. To quote one of my favorite Youtubers: this is how the world ends.

Warhammer 40'000 - First 8th game played! Also a rant

It was last Friday afternoon when I took the opportunity to face off against Black Templars in a small game of Warhammer 40k. My first 8th Edition game to be honest. How well or bad it went is something you will see in an upcoming battle report, but while I feel like it was a good battle, my overall game experience was mixed.

To be fair, it wasn't entirely the game's fault, and more that of my opponent, which brings me to the rant part of this post: preparation, or rather, my opponent's lack thereof. I can understand a first game not running perfectly smooth, but I do expect a player to at least know what miniatures they brought along and their army list composition. Nobody will be rock solid on the rules and the turn sequence just yet, but being able to tell your miniatures apart is not an unrealistic expectation.

Or is it? Are my standards too high?
I usually make myself a small quick reference sheet, so all the information I need is at hand and can be accessed fast without having to browse through pages and pages in those heavy books. But maybe I've just been spoiled by the unit cards from Warmachine, so I try to look for the same thing and feel in my normal games. There should be a minimal level of organisation regardless of your previous gaming background, and my opponent wasn't a first time tabletop player, which made it all the more annoying.

What do you think?

Red Scorpions Primaris Intercessors

Can't believe it's been such a long time since I last posted something here!
I am ashamed of myself for this lack of activity, made all the worse by the fact that I have not been idle, quite the opposite: I have continued to assemble and paint little plastic and pewter soldiers, so that I may send them onto a tabletop battlefield and roll dice.

I will have to do better, probably put it onto my list of good intentions for 2018 😉

Slowly getting back into Warhammer 40k after the release of some of the new models, which also means I have to take a break from other things, such as Warmachine, but I really like how the new Space Marine models look and couldn't resist buying the new Dark Imperium box along with a box of Intercessors. Luckily the shoulder pads are of compatible size, so I was able to just dust off all the old Forge World Red Scorpions bits and slap them right onto the new arrivals.

This was also the first batch of miniatures I completed using a mixed technique of airbrush and detail brushwork. It appears as though all that time watching Kenny Boucher ramble on his Next Level Painting YouTube channel paid off 😄

Anyway, here's the result. Do enjoy 😊

Yu-Jing Onibawan Shinobu Kitsune

Back with another Infinity model.
This time it's a character for the Yu-Jing faction.

Not much to say about this one, other than that I split the work into several sessions of about half an hour each. I didn't like the "shiny" version on the unit card, so I decided to go for a more matte look, more akin to the clothes and fabric of her outfit.
I still have the bad habit of washing sometimes, so I lost the transition of the metals in the blade (something I am not happy about), but for the rest I can't complain too much.
Learning by failing, right?

ALEPH Sophotect

Another finished work, this time for the sci-fi tabletop skirmish game Infinity.
This is a Sophotect of the ALEPH faction.

Painted in a roughly 5 1/2 hours long single session, the miniature is a pewter cast on a resin scenic base by Micro Art Studios.

Enjoy :D

Lich Lord Venethrax

Now comes the turn of a Cryx warcaster.
Had this primed model around for a while, gathering dust because I never got to play him in games, but I picked him up the other day to try out a new painting technique.
He was completed surprisingly fast, for my standards: just under 8 hours total, with most of the model's body and cloth roughly completed in a single 4-hour session. The rest was basing and correcting minor details.

Comments and critique are welcome, as always.
Enjoy :D

Misaki, Mistress of the Ten Thunders

Guilty!
I got sidetracked into painting some Malifaux miniatures.
It was hard to say no, to be honest, because I fell in love with the looks and design of the Ten Thunders the moment I saw them, and the few games I played with them were a blast.
The game itself is actually tons of fun, and it doesn't take up a whole day for a change; most games are played in less than an hour once you get all the rules straight.

Anyways, here's Misaki and her totem Shang.
Enjoy and let me know what you think :D

Work in Progress: Alice from Queen's Gate

Just so you know what's in store for you next :D
I've been working on this on and off for the past few weeks.
I've tried adapting Valloejo Game Colors for use with the airbrush, but they don't seem to work very well with garage kit primers: some spots keep flaking off, which is very annoying considering I have to work with masking tape a lot, and it's not pleasante when you have patches of skin coming off every time you remove the tape after a paint layer.

I've used chalk powder to shade the hair, let me know what you think.

Eldar Biel-Tan Farseer

It's been a while, time to post something new.
This is a finished Eldar Farseer of the Biel-Tan craftworld, painted for a friend.

Enjoy!

The Dark Elf

And so it came to be, the first of my "new" generation of garage kits.
The Fox lady I completed a long while back was still all hand-brushed, but after I bought an airbrush I've been eager to test it on these large scale models. In time I will use it to do some WH40k tanks, but for now there's just a Rhino playing victim for my airbrush settings.

Most of the large surfaces, such as the skin, the skirt and the boots, were done with the airbrush; the rest of the details, like the bronze-colored parts, were painted in after with a normal brush.

Anyways, here it is. A dark elf out of Lineage II (haven't played the game so I'll have to believe that part), in a 1:6 scale, standing 26cm tall. I couldn't find any info on the sculptor, but there's a 1:8 PVC figure from Good Smile Company I believe this sculpt is based off (perhaps a recast even).

The cast on the skirt came incomplete, so only half of the details could be seen, whereas the other half was just a plain blank. Which means I had the pleasure of sculpting out what was missing :P

To top it off, a close up of the face and the eyes; the latter were hand-painted with a brush, along with the hair and the lips. Of course she has gloss on the lips and the nail polish, but the sealer I used to protect the figure kinda dimmed the effect (though it's still slightly noticeable).

The wooden base was bought as-is and it came painted in white. I drilled the pin holes so the elf could stand, but the leg pose was so odd I had to use putty to stabilize and prevent her from tipping over.

I hope you enjoyed this and will stay tuned for more.

Feel free to leave comments and feedback :)

Namechange!

As my presence around the web, between online gaming and whatnot, has become increasingly popular through my username, which is often Kielari, I am attempting to have a more united front, so as to make it easier for other people to find me outside online gaming and so on.
Also, as my Red Scorpions have been shelved at least for the time being (really not a fan of 6th edition 40k), and my focus having shifted more towards garage kits and small painting commissions, the siege marines I so proudly portrayed in the title are no longer of relevance.
The content will remain unchanged though, so if you are still interested in miniature and garage kit modeling, stay tuned. Sooner or later, some news is going to appear here :D
